The Aerosol and Air Pollution Group is a multidisciplinary team at UST focusing on the investigating the sources, characteristics, impacts and control of urban air pollution. Our mission is to contribute to the development of systematic and fundamental knowledge on air pollution to inform effective air quality management and to develop break-through technologies and control strategies to protect public health and mitigate climate change. Our research activities include the physicochemical and toxicological characterization of aerosol and air pollution from traffic sources and in urban atmospheric environment, and the characterization of personal exposure in complex and heterogeneous microenvironments. We also devise and develop new and aerosol related measurement and control technologies to meet the emerging environmental challenges.
Understanding the sources and characterising air pollution in complex and dynamic urban built environment is a challenging research task. We use new measurement technology and methodology to better define the heterogeneity of urban air pollution as affected by urban built environment.
Next generation environmental sensor development and application is emerging in many environmental fields. We carry out research and development from upstream of sensor design and system integration to downstream of sensor algorithm study and its application in environmental research.
Human time-activity in microenvironment play an important role in determining individual exposure to air pollutants. We assess the personal exposure in complex urban environments, and also to use in-vitro exposure as a tool to understand the linkage of pollution with health effects.
Conventional monitoring and control technologies have limitations in their applications for emerging environmental challenges. We devise and develop new technologies and instruments to meet emerging environmental challenges in air pollution with close collaboration with industrial sectors.
